KIDNEY STONE

The pain associated with kidney stone has often been described as the worst pain a person has ever suffered, even by women who have given child birth. An agonizing pain in the lower back just below the ribs spreading around to front of abdomen and sometimes extending into the groin area are its classic symptoms. The pain may come in waves as the stone tries to move through the tube between the kidney and urinary bladder. Sometimes there will be blood in the urine. Often there is nausea, fever and vomiting. The abdomen or lower back may b painful to touch. The dilating or stretching of the urinary tract being blocked by the stuck stones causes the pain.

A kidney stone in a hard mass developed from crystals that separate from the urine and build up on the inner surface of kidney. Normally urine contains chemicals that prevent crystails from forming. These inhibitors do not seem to work for every one and as a result kidney stone starts forming. If the crystails remain tiny enough they will detach from the kidney and travel through the urinary tract and pass out through urine without being noticed. Kidney stone may contain various combinations of chemicals. The most common types of stones contain calcium oxalate monohydrate (97%) with rest (3%) as proteins and other chemicals. The oxalate and oxalic acid are a part of person's normal diet especially found in vegetables such as spinach, Beet roots and Tra. Calcium is always present in extra cellular fluids at fairly high concentration. Calcium oxalate is extremely insoluble in waiter; consequently, once kidney stones form, they will not readily redissolve. Less common types of stone are also present, sometimes caused by the infection of urinary tract. Such stones may have different chemical content.

Kidney stone are not the product of modern life as scientists have found evidence of kidney stones even in 7000 year old Egyptian mummy! Men tend to be affected more frequently than women and it is also found in many domestic pets such as Cats and Dogs. A kidney stone may grow, ranging in size from a tiny grain of sand to that of a golf ball. Small stones pass with urine without causing any problem. However, large stone might block the flow of urine or irritate the lining of urinary tract.

Kidney stone may form, grow in size and stand immobile inside the kidney for years without any warning pain or other indications. A few people have and pass small kidney stones without experiencing pain or other Indications, but that is not usual case. More often kidney stone makes itself dramatically know when it begins to move through the urinary tract. The question is why Calcium oxalate forms the kidney stones and pose a great problem. The reason lies in the fact that Calcium oxalate is a salt of calcium and oxalate ions and is poorly soluble in water, a common body fluid. The solubility of some common calcium salts is giving in the chart.

Compound of                           Solubility
Calcium                                    (gm in 100ml H²0)
1. Cal. Chloride                                  74.5
2. Cal. Chloride hexa
hydrate                                               27-9
3. Cal. Acetate                                       37
4. Cal. Cardonate                              0.0015
5. Cal. Oxalate                                  0.00067

Lithotrips provides a revolutionary treatment for kidney stone that eliminates the surgery. Lifho means stone and tripsy means to break into small fragments. It was introduced in USA 🇺🇸 in 1984 and uses powerful focussed pressure waves to smash kidney stones without harming th body with urine. The kidney stones were first located using fluoroscopy, which uses X- rays to project stones shadow on the screen. Treatment consists of about two shock waves each lasting for about 1 second to 30 minutes. It feels like a hard finger flick against one's back and is tolerable. Side effect that patients may experience include some brusing or discomfort on the back or abdomen during the procedure, and traces of blood may b found in the urine for a few days. About 80% of all the kidney stone patients can be treated successfully with lithripsy.

To lessen the chances of sufferings form kidney stone, doctors recommend drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water a day about double than what the average person likes consumes. Water is best because other fluids such as soft drink and diuretics and eliminate fluids from the body.
